humble bumble bee

Butterflies always serve as inspiration for “not famous yet,but will be famous soon” defense. Remember the story of the caterpillar who envied the butterfly? Or  the one where the caterpillar was teased by fellow worms as being ugly and always eating ? The caterpillar spends the day munching on leaves, crawling, wraps itself in a cocoon and goes to sleep (to sleep?) and struggles to come out of it. There are many version of the butterfly story. Metamorphosis is always used as an effective theme for presentations and performances. It always inspire people that each has its own time to flourish and that we undergo stages to become beautiful creatures in sight and might. The “Overcome to become” state of thinking. That we may not understand fully what and why we undergo certain situations but we trust that it is part of a greater plan that is good and beneficial for us.

When I was younger, I always see myself like the caterpillar and always hopeful that I’d become a colorful big butterfly rather than the small yellow ones . As I grew older and became capable of pointing thoughts out intelligently (haherm!) and most of the time crazily, I realized I don’t want to associate my kind of life with butterflies  anymore.

A butterfly flutters everywhere and I am the “first and forever” kind of person.  A flutterby just don’t fit my ideals maybe because I now seem to have established my preferences on some values. I don’t want to just flutter by, admired at, collected and displayed.

Now that I’m older, I wanted my life to be like that of a bumblebee, one that belongs to a community and has a specific part/task to do; one that contributes by getting a share of the work. A bumblebee that goes out in search of flowers to pollinate and brings precious nectar to a home that is waiting. One that stings when threatened (and if I sting, I will not die and that I can sting again). One that values hard work ,perseverance and experience.

A humblebee that is busy.  Yes, I wanted to be just like that.

“ aerodynamically, the bumblebee shouldn't be able to fly but the bumble bee doesn't know it so it goes on flying anyway”

Aerodynamically it cannot fly when compared to that of an airplane model because bumblebees have large bodies and small wings. Mechanically, it can, because its wings don’t glide (like that of an airplane). The wings beat about 200 times per second and please read more to know the secret of their flight.(by clicking here)

Because it doesn't know it cannot fly, It flies anyway: usually what hinders us from flying are the negative things people tell us and mostly the things we tell ourselves. Yes, sometimes, ignorance is a bliss. When you don’t know, you just do your best and continue doing your best.

And even if someone told the bees that they cannot fly, they will fly anyway:  so I’m saying do not let other people initially calculate your capabilities. They usually sum up your abilities by what they see (your frame, your brand name etc.) .  That is because they lack additional factors to consider in solving the equation to what’s your worth is. Give them the values but then, even if the values are given already, there is no fixed or general equation that can be used for in calculating. So when someone tells you “you can’t”, you try (first)! You know yourself way more than anyone else.

Like the flight of the bumblebee I’d like to live life like this. Full of enthusiasm (breathless but alive!)

..as I grow older, I change perspective. As I experience more of life I realized there's a huge difference in merely "seeing life" than "actually living it". As life reveals its harshness,I pray that I won't take flight and leave my dreams behind..I pray that, just like a bumblebee,I will take flight against it and fight. (so help me God.)

P.S. The lifespan of a bumble bee might be shorter as that of 5 days (ooops!)* and so I'll just say, It's not the number of years you live but how you lived your years that matters. A life of quality and substance will leave a legacy that will last nthyears.

*a butterfly's lifespan ranges from 3-4 weeks to a maximum of a year.

The Phlegmatic on retreat took a leap

Last January 30-31 I joined the senior’s retreat. Joining was unplanned because all I wanted was an escape from the usual environment in work and in school. I just used the excuse that my name was included in the list for the retreat. ooops!

I was surprised when I found out that Montegelo Farm is located at Obrero Farm. A place that I was always curious of every time I pass on that high road going to my hometown. The place made me miss home that I wanted to stay a little longer. There are trees everywhere, birds chirping on an early morn and the flowing river that gave the perfect environment of calmness and constancy.

The event being a retreat, I hoped that I’d get to sleep with my closer acquaintances and that I wished none of them would be joining the same group I’m into.  I was so happy that all of my group mates were new faces that made me more comfortable in sharing my story and gave me the chance to meet new found friends.

As a retreat, I thought it would be composed more of a “me” time. Of talking and listening to myself and to hear more of what God is trying to tell me which I might be ignoring in the hustle and bustle of my daily life in the city. But what happened was different, we were always in a circled group, and God was talking to me through the shared stories of my friends. I was listening intently to their stories and at the same time I was struggling within resisting the urge to cry and take up somebody else’s time to share. With a poker face and occasional big nods on every nerve hit, I realized that I had a better life and that I must be thankful to the kind of life I had and having. Life had been less cruel to me and I’ve been taking a good life for granted.

Sharing a heartbreaking story while crying and laughing at it at the same time was an act of breaking free, a silent permission to never letting the bad things tie us up into moping and hating forever. They’ve been survivors in life, and they’d shown to me again and again that bad times do come but surely it’s not going to stay forever. It is so funny to think that those people who went through so many hardships in life are the ones who laugh more.

I was a Phlegmatic on retreat; I was silently watching their lives and learning from it. They fueled my desire to strive for an ideal kind of life. To resist the given judgments and prove to people that we can do/be better and that we are destined for the same greatness in any way. It was also a relief to know that, with my personality, I am just as normal as everybody else. It has always been a daily struggle for me when I keep comparing myself to someone (a person whom I think is normal) and trying to find how can I become a normal one. Yes,I am aware that we are all different, but meeting people with the same personality as I am was comforting. Conversing in the same level has never been that good.  You won’t worry whether the other person finds you boring and weird. You give very big nods because you can relate to them.

We were given the chance to unload whatever is weighing our hearts down and that made room for more good things to come.
On that retreat, I can hear God whispering to me:

“see? You are created with inborn greatness and goodness. Life is made fair, good things will come and if it’s turn for bad things to come, I will light the right path, just keep your eyes opened and walk by faith. Do not resist the change and the challenges, for the things you’re praying for will come in My perfect time.”---and I was having goosebumps allover.

I am forever hopeful, ever patient in waiting, but I think God wouldn’t want me to stagnate myself waiting for His time. I believe He wants me to live each day as preparation. Each moment will serve as a step on a journey He prepared for me. I was always wonderin’ and worried about my future, after that retreat, I was given a certain peace. “Why worry? If you are giving your best and if you are striving to live a good life, why worry?”

And so, I left Montegelo Farm with friends and brought with me not pineapples but a renewed determination to continue striving in living a good life and become a better phlegmatic (by that I mean lesser weak points in personality) or maybe break free from being a phlegmatic and become more outspoken, outgoing and genuinely confident. After all, we are called to make manifest the greatness of God’s creation.

..an abundance of Katherines and Ice creams.

..healthy treat it is.
I’m not an ice cream freak but my moods  were swirling down that  I need some good ol’ pick-me-upper. Normally a good book does the trick but I needed another booster… this is the part where the ice cream crept in.

FIC (Fruits in Ice Cream) in Cagayan de Oro City is located at 2nd Floor Ayala Centrio Mall.  The attendant is friendly and patiently attends to your queries regarding the array of choices, explains options thus leading you to come up with a more personal choice. You can opt for an ice cream on a cup or on a cone.

If you’re someone like me who loves savoring moments, this is the place where you get to enjoy your ice cream in contented silence. By silence, I meant free from unnecessary noise. Plus they play Boyce Avenue on air (my fave…yay!)…in a matter of one song, I know I’ve just found a special place that I can keep coming back to.

Didn't had any hard time finishing it.
I ordered a scoop of pistachio and another for raspberry rapture..
Color is natural. Flavor taste is natural plus there are actual pistachio nuts in it! Generously, I say! What more can I say? Perhaps just a hmmm and two thumbs up!

You can like their FB page Fruits in Ice cream or visit their site by clicking this link.

P.S. I just bought myself a new book! Abundance of Katherines by John Green…(retail therapy)

...in vino overload, there can be truth

a while ago,a good friend of mine is asking me about whether a person like him has a chance on someone like me. That one caught me offguard and I have to make sure whether he's drunk or not.Well he's not drunk, just a little sober maybe. Dwelling on the thought though, I am so curious why people  have these kind of questions when in the first place,it's not a question at all.It is a thought...just a floating thought. I do believe that asking this out loud is like an insult to both persons. Why would you think there is no chance? And if there really isn't,why do you say so? This is not a test you take in school where you should write `true` or `false`,or choose a,b,c,d or e writing the answers on the space provided. Nor an exam where the solution to the problem is shown. We live the answers to the questions that life gives us.

Everyone has a chance if we just take a chance. Only if we believe in ourselves,we are all capable and able. Let us try to minimize the instances wherein we tend to group people into "good","not so good","better" and "no good". See your potential and feel the miracle in you just waiting to burst into splendid beauty.Go take the chance,if you're happy with it,you will not regret it even if you flunked. There are no guaranteed things in this world.Everything and everyone is bound for a change.

As for my friend out there, i think I might also need the shots to give you a pointless answer. Now that I'm only drunk with tap water,I'll just have to tell you "only life can give a NO for an answer...the rest should always say YES to life"

...narrowing down choices

I don’t want a Cinderella kind of story I prefer a Barbie kind of life.

Don’t get me wrong, I watched Cinderella over and over again. I admire her goodness and patience for her Stepmother and sisters, her cheerful optimistic attitude on the kind of treatment she has at home.  Every time I watch it, I am consoled by the thought that, no matter what happens and whatever situation you are in, there will always be people on your side (portrayed by the birds, rats and the fairy Godmother and even the horse) to cheer you up, feel for you, help you and even grant your wishes. I believe too that someday my Prince will come and that no kind of hindrance can prevent my destiny from reaching me even when I’m on the remotest hidden place in the world.

Yes, I think I got the story.

In this kind of life I live, Romantic notions are not on my priority list, I agree to some thoughts that Love is a byproduct of your daily activity; More of an incentive or, in my terms, just a surprise freebie.
We don’t work hard to be loved; we work because we need money to live.

We don’t study well and do good in school to be loved, it is because we owe that to our parents/guardians for sending us to school and we owe that too to our dreams.

We don’t extend help to be loved, we do because it is rightful.

We don’t take care of ourselves and make effort to be pretty to be loved, we do that because we feel good being healthy and beautiful.

Our main goal in life is to live a good honest life and I do believe things will follow after that

And this is where Barbie comes in again. My father always teases me on my addiction to Barbie movies in college days saying I’m too old for such kind. (fact: cartoon figures were originally made for adults as humorous portrayal ).Eventually, the tease became a negative one. He thought that the reason why I’m skinny is that I don’t eat well because I wanted that Barbie figure. No,I am not! I repeat,NO. I love Barbie not because of her looks (oh well,It’s a plus that she’s beautiful), I came to love her because of her attitude and outlook in life. Whether it’s a fairy movie or the Diary movie, I see a strong independent woman. Yes, she does have friends like Cinderella and the rest of princesses does; (I vow not to make any comparisons). It’s just that Barbie is outright smart and effortlessly shows no effort to show it but then again, it shows. It’s a regal thing.

A life living to fullest in the most honest and dignified way.
Believing in the power of goodness of others and highlighting individuality.
Full of dreams, armed with confidence and the will to pursue them no matter what.
Making new friends because there are really no strangers in this life, just friends we haven’t met yet.
Being responsible in the fact that our responsibility isn’t just to ourselves and our inner circle of loved ones but to the community as well.
Extending help whenever given the chance and provide aid wherever necessary.
Seeing beauty in the smallest of things and being able to enjoy it.
Making not so good decisions and sometimes being clumsy and not dwelling on it.
Exploring curiosities and admitting we don’t know much, that there is more to what we know.
Showcasing the power of honesty and of forgiveness and faith.

As  I see more of life, I gradually found out that there is more to life than prince charming.

I like cinderellie (that’s how close Cinderella is to me,I call it ‘name of endearment’)

I love Barbie.

..simple as that or so I think
